Vedic Astrology vs Western Astrology

Vedic Astrology Western V/s Vedic Astrology

Institute of Vedic Astrology Indore gives a detailed difference analysis of Western Astrology Vs Indian Vedic Astrology on various aspects. The roots of astrology flourished in India and gained immense popularity throughout the world. The earlier expression for Vedic astrology was simply “Jyotish Shastra (Jyotisam)” which means the science of the light. Vedic astrology is a sacred science, which was revealed by the great saints of India, more than 5000 years ago and was encompassed from generation to generation giving solution to people’s distress, bad luck and problems.

Western astrology on the other hand is the system of astrological predictions most popular in western countries. Indian astrology mostly deals with horoscope, which means, it is a form of prediction and analogy based on the construction of a horoscope for an exact moment, such as the time of a baby's birth, in which various planetary bodies are said to have an influence. Astrology in west mostly deals with an individual's date of birth only. Apart from this basic difference Vedic and western astrology differs in many ways. Let’s have a detailed look at the major differences between both of them-

The way Zodiac is seen in both of these astrological forms
One of the major differences between the two systems is the way the zodiac is looked at itself. Western astrology uses a zodiac based on the seasons whereas in Vedic astrology the zodiac is based on Sidereal Zodiac which means the actual constellations in the sky. Meaning, if you have a sun sign Leo according to the Western astrology, it is likely that the sun was actually in the constellation of cancer, the stars of cancer, during the time of your birth.

Difference in calculation of events
Vedic astrology gives importance to the date and time of birth of a person to calculate about the important events in his life. Western astrology on the other hand focuses only on the date of birth and not the time which often makes the predictions not so accurate. Western astrology mostly deals with horoscope where the sky is divided into 27 constellations, which form a base of all astrological calculations over there along with the sun.

Emphasis on Sun VS Moon
The Western astrology gives greater emphasis to the position of the Sun in a specific sun sign in comparison to Vedic astrology where the sole emphasis is on the position of the Moon in a sign along with the Ascendant (Lagna). Solar-based system is better at evaluating the personality and characteristics of a person. Lunar based system on the other hand is better at describing the soul nature and predicting the future events.

Which is better Vedic Astrology or Western Astrology?
All of these differences make it quite clear that both of these forms of astrology hold their own importance. Western astrology uses a different system which is much more like an open system where the traditional methods are not given too much of importance to prepare the birth chart. In Vedic astrology, on the other hand, traditional methods form the base of calculation and analogy. The outer planets are not used over here because we cannot see them through our naked eyes. The best thing about Vedic astrology is that planets over here are directly related to energizing factors such as yoga, ayurveda, and many other important spiritual assets of India.

Western astrology can sometimes give absurd results because over here the astrologers believe in Sun sign which is fixed for one month compared to Vedic astrology in which we give emphasis to the Moon fixed for 2.25 days. Let’s have a quick glance at why Vedic astrology is different than western astrology.
